Spring Trends at Toronto Fashion Week

Last week at World MasterCard Fashion Week, I made note of the emerging trades for Spring 2013 – many prevailing from previous seasons and some new takes on the classics. I really enjoyed the combination of sexy and sweet, femininity with a touch of edge, leather and lace. Here’s what you want to look out for when doing your spring shopping:

Peplums
Blouses, blazers, skirts and dresses, the peplum comes in many forms for spring. The sleeveless and belted peplum blouse was popular on the Express runway, while fitted peplum blazers with lace details and exposed zippers were seen at Rachel Sin and MATIS. I loved the sheer gauzy version of the peplum dress at Lucian Matis and Rachel Sin updated the classic peplum dress with contrasting lace and a peter pan collar. This trend isn’t going anywhere…

Sheers
We’ve all seen sheers before, especially in spring/summer fashion, but for SS’13 we’ll see plenty of maxi length dresses with peekaboo sheer paneling. I loved the belted black numbers seen on the UNTTLD and VAWK runways; elegant and sexy without being too revealing.

Moto Jackets
They’ve been around for a while, but next season we’ll see a new class of moto jackets in a wide variety of colours and materials. Over-sized lapels, snaps and zips are still the usual suspects, but expect soft suede and supple leather in stunning jewel and pastel tones. I loved the magenta version seen at Soia & Kyo and the neon yellow at Mackage.

Tailored Blazers
Every closet should have at least one incredibly tailored blazer; take some inspiration from the SS’13 runways and stray from the ordinary with bold colours and tuxedo styles. Rachel Sin presented two gorgeous single button tuxedo blazers with contrast trim and I loved the cropped and colourful styles seen at Arthur Mendonca and VAWK.

Leather
Leather accents were huge last season, but spring 2013 takes it up a notch with full leather styles on various runways. I loved the leather jacket and skirt combo at Travis Taddeo and the belted leather peplum top at Caitlin Power, but the fitted leather dress at VAWK really took my breath away. We saw smooth, pebbled and even crocodile style leather at Lucian Matis.

Eastern Influences
Yet another recurring theme on the spring runways, I noted a lot of Eastern influences  for SS’13 as well. From simple and elegant kimono sleeves and obi belts on the Arthur Mendonca runway to elaborate Japanese inspired robes at UNTTLD – there was a wide range of Eastern inspirations.

Black & White
Last but not least, black and white was the predominant theme that I noticed at World MasterCard Fashion Week. From elegant black dresses and classic spring white suiting to geometric colour blocking and optic prints – black and white was everywhere. It was most prevalent at the Joe Fresh show in elaborate checkered and mod optic prints, but I really enjoyed the silky colour blocked pieces on the Melissa Nepton runway. Can’t go wrong with black and white!

In addition to the classic neutrals (black, white and nude), the following colours were hot on the runways setting the scene for spring 2013:

  • Pink: Magenta and Coral
  • Blue: Pale Grey Blue and Robin’s Egg to Royal and Navy
  • Yellow: Mostly Neon and Chartreuse

While we may not see ourselves replicating runway styles, the SS’13 trends translate well into wearable fashion that we can all enjoy. I for one can’t wait to see more spring peplums and sheers and I definitely have a few tailored blazers and moto jackets on my wishlist!
